Youths are very importance in ensuring that there is democracy in the country. Voting is one of the processes that people exercise their democratic rights. It is a right for all people to participate in all democratic processes available in the country. According to (Brettschneider 57), in most countries, it is not all people who participate in voting process. Brett Schneider (2014) maintains that youths are mostly affected since they do not understand the need to take part in all democratic rights. Additionally, youths are very ignorant and as a result they fail to realize the mistake they make when absconding their responsibilities in ensuring that the country is run in the most democratic way possible. In Uganda, during 1998 general election, there were many aspirants vying for the post of Member of Parlia ment (MP) in the western region of Bukula, among them was Stephen Chimbe. Chimbe was a youthful aspirant who had the aspiration of serving the people of that area without any bias of discrimination. Having attained the top level of education and seeing the poverty people are going through every day, Chimbe was hungry of success, seeing people in the area are able to eradicate poverty and have the ability to acquire the basic needs. Like other aspirants, Chimbe was engaged fully in the political campaigns urging the people in the region to vote for him. Chimbe set his goals accurately, employing his critical thinking, he was able to move around the region pleading with people to vote for him telling them that he would ensure that all people in the region are free from poverty once he is elected the MP in that region. In all this time, his only hope was to secure many votes from the youthful population. One would see the sense of voting for this aspirant. This is because, political le aders have a huge contribution in ensuring that people have an access to all basic needs, and they have a good lifestyle (Seifert 198).Just like in any country, youth is crucial in Uganda. Youthful population is imperative in bringing change in the country (Miller 71). Youth are believed to engage in critical thinking while engaging in different activities. The age of most youths allows them to engage their mindfully while performing any task. Their knowledge and physical ability of young people can be harnessed and be used to transform many things, especially in the political field. Thus, Chimbe was counting on the youth in the region to come in large numbers during voting day in order to exercise their rights in selecting a leader who the desire, Chimbe. During the campaign period, all youth in the region vowed to cast their votes in different voting station in Bukula region. They declared their support to Chimbe so that they can get some favors from him. They were never serious about voting since most of they had not registered as the voter, and they spent most of their time drinking traditional beers instead of taking time to register as voters. In any election, it is a person with the most votes or who has attained a certain percentage, as stipulated in the law, is declared the winners (Miller 69). Without any doubt, Chimbe was the right person to become the MP in Bukula region. This is because; his action before he was even an aspirant indicated that he had the heart to help all people, indiscriminately, in order to improve lives and that of their future generation. Chimbe arranges various trainings that targeted the youthful population mostly, with the aim of helping them understand that critical thinking is a very important aspect in day to day life of an individual. Additionally, he sensitized people in the region, mostly the youth, about the importance of electing leaders who have a good track record and those who are willing to help the general p ublic without obtaining any favors.Contrary to the expectation of many people in Bukula region, and Chimbe himself, the turnout was unimaginably low.
